Which cathedral in Dublin is Ireland’s largest and is dedicated to Saint Patrick?
Answer
St Patrick’s Cathedral
Answer
St Patrick’s Cathedral
St Patrick’s Cathedral is Ireland’s largest cathedral and is dedicated to Saint Patrick. The Anglican cathedral stands beside Saint Patrick’s Park in central Dublin and serves as the national cathedral of the Church of Ireland.
The present building dates mainly from the thirteenth century, although the site has much older Christian associations. Tradition connects it with a well where Saint Patrick was believed to baptize converts. A small church on the site was replaced by the present Gothic structure, which was built between 1191 and 1270.
The cathedral suffered damage and decline over the centuries. Benjamin Guinness funded a major restoration in the nineteenth century, completed in 1865, helping preserve the medieval building and its distinctive west front and tall tower.
St Patrick’s Cathedral is sometimes confused with nearby Christ Church Cathedral, which is also an Anglican cathedral and the cathedral of the Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough. St Patrick’s has no bishop’s seat and is designated as a national cathedral.
