Which cathedral in Liverpool is the largest cathedral in Britain by area?

The story behind the answer

Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Britain by area. It is the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool and stands on St James’s Mount, overlooking the city centre.

The cathedral was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, who won the competition for its design in 1903 when he was only 22. Construction began in 1904, but the building was not consecrated until 1924 and was finally completed in 1978. Its long construction period means that the cathedral combines early twentieth-century Gothic design with later work.

Liverpool Cathedral is built mainly from local sandstone and has a central tower rising about 100 metres. Its interior is notable for its enormous nave, extensive stained glass, and a very large organ installed by Henry Willis & Sons.

It is sometimes confused with Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, the city’s Roman Catholic cathedral. The two buildings belong to different Christian denominations and have markedly different architectural styles.
