Answer
Barter Books
Answer
Barter Books
The English bookshop that rediscovered a copy of “Keep Calm and Carry On” in 2000 was Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland. The shop’s co-owner, Stuart Manley, found the poster in a box of second-hand books purchased at auction.
Barter Books occupies the former Alnwick railway station, a Victorian building opened in 1887. After discovering the poster, Stuart and Mary Manley framed it and displayed it near the cash register. Customers responded enthusiastically, so the shop began producing and selling reproductions.
The original poster had been designed by Britain’s Ministry of Information in 1939 to maintain public morale during the expected threat of war. Around 2.45 million copies were printed, but the design was rarely displayed and remained largely unknown for decades. Its rediscovery helped turn it into a global symbol of stoicism.
The slogan later appeared on mugs, shirts, signs, and countless parody versions. Its modern popularity therefore came not from wartime mass exposure, but from Barter Books’ chance discovery and reproduction of the design.
