The Scotland flag emoji is represented through a Unicode tag sequence. Unlike ordinary country flags, it begins with a black flag and uses invisible tag characters spelling the subdivision code for Scotland.
This system allows emoji to represent some subdivisions of the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland, and Wales. The visible result depends on whether a platform supports the relevant sequence. Unsupported software may show a black flag, separate invisible-control placeholders, or another fallback rather than the familiar Scottish flag.
This is different from regional-indicator flags such as Japan or Canada, which are built from two regional indicator symbols. Tag-sequence flags use a base flag plus tag characters and a cancel-tag character. The underlying sequence is technical, even though users generally experience it as one flag emoji.
