Sindarin is the Elvish language J.R.R. Tolkien developed as the everyday language of many Elves in Beleriand.
In Tolkien’s linguistic history, Sindarin developed from the speech of the Sindar, or Grey Elves. It became widely used in Beleriand during the First Age and remained an important language in later periods of Middle-earth. Tolkien designed its sound and historical development with the care of a real language.
Sindarin is distinct from Quenya, another major Elvish language. Quenya was associated especially with the High Elves and had a more formal or classical role in much of the later legendarium. Tolkien created relationships between the languages, including earlier forms and sound changes.
Names such as Sindarin itself, Elrond, Galadriel, and Minas Tirith reflect Tolkien’s constructed-language work, although individual names can have complicated histories. Khuzdul is the language of the Dwarves, while Adûnaic is associated with Númenor.
