J.R.R. Tolkien created Quenya as the Elvish language of the Noldor in Middle-earth.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed invented languages. Within the legendarium, it originated among the Elves of Valinor and was especially associated with the Noldor, a people whose history includes Fëanor, the Silmarils, and the return to Middle-earth. Tolkien modeled aspects of its sound and structure on languages such as Finnish and Latin.
Quenya remained a language of lore, ceremony, and formal use for many speakers in Middle-earth. Sindarin, another major Elvish language, became more widely spoken among Elves in Beleriand and later regions. This difference in social use is one reason both languages appear prominently in Tolkien’s writings.
Quenya should not be confused with a single generic “Elvish” language. Tolkien developed several Elvish tongues and related historical forms, with Quenya and Sindarin receiving the greatest attention.
