J.R.R. Tolkien called Quenya the language of the High Elves.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed constructed languages and is associated especially with the Ñoldor and other Elves of Valinor. Tolkien modeled aspects of its sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing on his broader study of historical languages. It is often presented as formal, literary, or ceremonial speech in the mythology.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language, but it developed as the everyday language of many Elves in Middle-earth. The two languages are related within Tolkien’s fictional history, yet they are not interchangeable names for the same tongue.
Quenya appears in names, poems, blessings, and titles across Tolkien’s legendarium. The language’s grammar was never published as one complete finished system during Tolkien’s lifetime, so modern learners reconstruct it from his notes and the texts he released.
