Which Elvish language did J.R.R. Tolkien base on Finnish and develop extensively?

The story behind the answer

Quenya is the Elvish language J.R.R. Tolkien based partly on Finnish and developed extensively.

Tolkien began developing Quenya during the 1910s, drawing inspiration from Finnish as well as Latin and Greek. He created its sounds, grammar, vocabulary, and historical development in much greater detail than is possible for most fictional languages.

In Tolkien’s mythology, Quenya was associated especially with the High Elves, including the Ñoldor and Vanyar. It was an ancient and prestigious language, while Sindarin became more widely spoken among Elves in Middle-earth during the later ages.

Quenya appears in names, poems, ceremonial speech, and titles throughout Tolkien’s writings. The language’s Finnish influence does not mean it is Finnish or a direct translation system. Tolkien transformed his inspirations into an original language with its own fictional history and relationship to other tongues.
