Quenya is the Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien that is associated with Valinor.
In Tolkien’s linguistic mythology, Quenya developed from the speech of the Elves who lived in Valinor, the realm of the Valar. It is especially connected with the High Elves, including the Ñoldor and Vanyar, and it carries an elevated or ceremonial status in much of the legendarium.
Quenya is not the same language as Sindarin. Sindarin became the everyday Elvish language of many Elves in Middle-earth, while Quenya was often preserved in formal names, songs, records, and lore.
Tolkien based elements of Quenya chiefly on Finnish, while Sindarin drew strongly on Welsh. His invented languages were not decorative word lists: their sound patterns, grammar, and historical relationships were central to the mythology he built around them.
