Quenya is the Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien and associated with the High Elves.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of a larger family of invented languages for his legendarium. Its structure and sound were influenced especially by Finnish, while other languages, including Latin and Greek, also contributed inspiration. In Middle-earth’s history, Quenya was connected with the Elves of Aman and the Noldor.
Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another major Elvish language in Tolkien’s writings. Sindarin became more widely used in much of Middle-earth during the Third Age, whereas Quenya had a more formal, ancient, and ceremonial role. Tolkien’s language-making came before and helped shape many elements of his fictional history, rather than being an ornamental addition made after the stories were complete.
