Quenya is the Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien that is also called High-elven.
Tolkien based much of Quenya’s sound and structure on languages including Finnish, Latin, and Greek. Within Tolkien’s fictional history, it is associated especially with the Noldor and other high Elves, and it preserves an elevated, literary role in Middle-earth.
Quenya is not the everyday Elvish language most commonly heard in The Lord of the Rings. That role generally belongs to Sindarin, another major Elvish language used by many Elves in Middle-earth. The two languages are related in Tolkien’s invented linguistic history but are distinct.
Tolkien developed Quenya over many decades, revising its vocabulary, grammar, and history repeatedly. His constructed languages were central to the creation of Middle-earth rather than being added merely as decorative names.
