Which Elton John song was written for the 1971 film Friends?

“Friends” was the Elton John song written for the 1971 film Friends.

The song was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin for the soundtrack of the American drama film Friends, directed by Lewis Gilbert. John recorded it during the period when his profile was rapidly expanding after the success of his self-titled album and “Your Song.”

“Friends” was released as a single in 1971 and became a US hit, reaching number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. It later appeared on the Friends soundtrack album and on compilations of John’s work. The title can be confusing because it is also the name of the film and the soundtrack, but the question refers specifically to John’s song rather than to one of his later television or soundtrack collaborations.
