Which Elton John song was the best-selling single of 1997 worldwide?

The story behind the answer

“Candle in the Wind 1997” was the best-selling single of 1997 worldwide.

Elton John recorded the rewritten version after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in August 1997. Bernie Taupin adapted the lyrics from their earlier 1973 song “Candle in the Wind,” changing the subject from Marilyn Monroe to Diana. George Martin produced the recording.

Released as a double A-side with “Something About the Way You Look Tonight,” the single sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. It became the best-selling single since charts began and one of the most commercially successful recordings in music history. The 1997 version should not be confused with John’s original 1973 recording, which appeared on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
