Rock of the Westies became the second consecutive Elton John album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Released in October 1975, it followed Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, the first album ever to enter the chart at number one.

The achievement made Elton John the first artist to have two consecutive studio albums debut at the top of the Billboard 200. Rock of the Westies also continued a remarkable run of American success that began with Honky Château in 1972.

The album marked a change in John's band lineup. Drummer Nigel Olsson and bassist Dee Murray were replaced for the recording by Roger Pope and Kenny Passarelli, while guitarist Davey Johnstone and percussionist Ray Cooper remained involved. The new personnel gave the record a somewhat different sound.

Its lead single, “Island Girl,” also topped the Billboard Hot 100. The album title is a play on “west of the Rockies,” referring to the Caribou Ranch recording location in Colorado.
