Tesla became the first automaker to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021.
Tesla crossed the threshold in October 2021 after its share price surged following news of a large vehicle order from Hertz. The company’s valuation reflected expectations about future electric-vehicle growth, battery technology, software, and manufacturing scale.
Tesla’s market value was unusual because it greatly exceeded the valuations of established automakers that sold more vehicles at the time. Investors were valuing Tesla not only as a car manufacturer but also as a potential leader in electric mobility, energy storage, and autonomous-driving technology.
The milestone was based on publicly traded shares and therefore could move with daily market prices. It did not mean Tesla had more revenue or production than every competitor.
