Tesla became the first automaker valued at more than $1 trillion.
Tesla’s market capitalization passed $1 trillion in October 2021 after its share price rose sharply following a major vehicle-order announcement. The milestone made Tesla the first car manufacturer to join the small group of companies with trillion-dollar stock-market valuations.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and initially focused on proving that electric cars could be desirable and commercially viable. Its Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y helped expand the company’s global profile, while its battery and charging businesses supported the wider strategy.
Market capitalization is not the same as the number of vehicles sold. Traditional automakers have often produced far more cars, while Tesla’s valuation reflected expectations about future growth in electric vehicles, software, batteries, and energy storage.
