Tesla joined the trillion-dollar market-cap club in October 2021.
Tesla’s market capitalization exceeded $1 trillion on October 25, 2021, after its share price surged following news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The order announcement strengthened investor confidence in demand for battery-powered cars and Tesla’s ability to scale production.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and became a major force in the electric-vehicle industry with models such as the Roadster, Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Its valuation also reflected expectations about energy storage, charging infrastructure, software, and future vehicle production.
A company’s market capitalization can be much larger than the value of its current physical factories or yearly vehicle deliveries because it incorporates investors’ expectations about future earnings. Tesla’s milestone therefore measured the stock market’s assessment of the business, not a government or industry valuation.
