Tesla became the first automaker valued at more than $1 trillion.
Tesla passed the $1 trillion market-capitalization level in October 2021 after a sharp rise in its share price. The event reflected investor expectations about electric-vehicle adoption, battery technology, software, manufacturing growth, and Tesla’s future position in the automobile industry. It was a valuation milestone, not a claim that Tesla had generated $1 trillion in sales.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and initially became known for the Roadster, its battery-electric sports car. The Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y broadened the company’s range. Tesla’s valuation drew debate because traditional automakers generally produced more vehicles and had longer operating histories, while Tesla was valued for expected future growth. Market capitalization can therefore differ dramatically from rankings based on revenue, production volume, profit, or total assets.
