Which electric-car maker became the first automaker to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Tesla became the first automaker to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization.

Tesla crossed the milestone in October 2021 after its share price jumped following news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The valuation made Tesla the first car manufacturer to enter the trillion-dollar market-cap group.

This was a stock-market valuation rather than the value of Tesla’s factories, vehicles, or physical assets. Investors were pricing expectations about electric-vehicle growth, software, battery technology, autonomous driving, and Tesla’s future production scale.

Tesla’s achievement stood out because traditional automakers generally generated much higher vehicle volumes but traded at far lower valuations. Market capitalization reflects investor expectations as well as current financial results, so companies with different production levels can receive very different values.
