Tesla became the first automaker to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla’s valuation crossed the threshold after its share price surged following news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The order announcement strengthened investor expectations about electric-vehicle demand and Tesla’s ability to scale production.
Tesla’s market value was unusual compared with the sales and production volumes of established automakers. Investors were valuing not only vehicle deliveries but also possible future growth in batteries, software, charging, autonomous-driving technology, and energy storage.
The milestone did not mean Tesla had become the world’s largest automaker by unit sales. Traditional manufacturers such as Toyota and Volkswagen produced more vehicles for many years. Market capitalization measures the value investors assign to a company’s equity, while production, revenue, and profit are separate measurements.
