Which Egyptian funerary composition is known in English as the Book of Caverns?

The story behind the answer

The Book of Caverns is the English name of an ancient Egyptian funerary composition about the sun god’s underworld journey.

The text describes the solar deity passing through a sequence of cavern-like regions. It focuses strongly on the punishment of enemies of the gods and on the restoration of divine order before sunrise.

Like other New Kingdom underworld books, it was placed in royal tombs and connected the deceased ruler with the sun’s nightly regeneration. Its scenes are arranged in sections rather than following the same structure as the Book of Gates or the Amduat.

The word “caverns” refers to the underworld spaces in the composition, not to ordinary burial chambers. The title is a modern English designation for an Egyptian text whose imagery varies among surviving tomb versions.
