Which educator won the 2026 Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre Education?

Freddie Hendricks won the 2026 Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre Education.

Hendricks was recognized for his work with Utopian Academy for the Arts. The Excellence in Theatre Education Award honors an educator or organization that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to theatre education and its impact on students and communities.

The award is presented as part of the Tony Awards but is separate from the competitive categories for Broadway productions. It highlights educational leadership rather than acting, directing, writing or design achievement on a particular production.

The 2026 ceremony also included several other non-competitive honors. Mary-Mitchell Campbell received the Isabelle Stevenson Award, the League of Resident Theatres received a Special Tony Award and American Players Theatre received the Regional Theatre Tony Award. These distinctions are easy to mix up because all were announced during the same Tony Awards event.
