Which driver won the inaugural Formula One race at Silverstone in 1950?

The story behind the answer

Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural Formula One race at Silverstone in 1950.

Farina won the 1950 British Grand Prix for Alfa Romeo, driving the supercharged Alfa Romeo 158. Held on 13 May at the former RAF Silverstone airfield, the race was the first round of the newly established Formula One World Championship and is generally regarded as the first World Championship Formula One race.

Farina started from pole position and also set the fastest lap, completing a historic hat-trick. He finished ahead of Alfa Romeo teammates Luigi Fagioli and Reg Parnell. Juan Manuel Fangio, another Alfa Romeo driver and the eventual championship runner-up, retired with engine trouble.

The event is sometimes described simply as the British Grand Prix, but its formal title was the Royal Automobile Club Grand Prix of Europe incorporating the British Grand Prix. Farina later won the 1950 Drivers’ Championship, becoming Formula One’s first World Champion.
