Answer
Ayrton Senna
Which driver won the 1988 Formula One World Championship? Ayrton Senna won the 1988 Formula One World Championship.
Senna secured his first drivers’ title during his first season with McLaren, driving the Honda-powered MP4/4. He won eight of the sixteen races and took thirteen pole positions, while teammate Alain Prost won seven races. McLaren dominated the season, winning fifteen of the sixteen Grands Prix between its two drivers.
The final points table can cause confusion because Prost scored more total points over the season. In 1988, however, only a driver’s best eleven results counted toward the championship. Senna’s eight victories produced 90 counted points, compared with Prost’s 87, so Senna became world champion. Nelson Piquet, the outgoing champion, finished third.
