Which driver won the 1932 Le Mans after driving for over 20 hours?

Raymond Sommer won the 1932 Le Mans after driving for more than 20 hours when his teammate Luigi Chinetti became too ill to continue.

Sommer and Chinetti shared an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, but the planned driver rotation effectively collapsed during the race. Chinetti retired from driving because of illness, leaving Sommer to carry the car through most of the 24-hour contest. Despite the extraordinary physical demand, Sommer maintained the pace needed to win the endurance classic.

The victory was a landmark in Sommer’s career and established him as one of the era’s great privateer endurance racers. He returned to win Le Mans again in 1933, this time sharing an Alfa Romeo with the celebrated Italian driver Tazio Nuvolari. Sommer’s success was notable because he was not primarily known as a Grand Prix winner; his greatest achievements came in long-distance sports-car racing.

The question is sometimes confused by Chinetti’s later reputation at Le Mans. Chinetti became a major multiple winner, but he was Sommer’s teammate—not the driver credited with carrying the 1932 race after the illness-related withdrawal.
