Which driver won Formula One titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006?

The story behind the answer

Fernando Alonso won Formula One World Championship titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

Alonso’s first championship ended Michael Schumacher and Ferrari’s five-year reign. Driving Renault’s R25, he won seven Grands Prix and secured the 2005 title at the Brazilian Grand Prix with two races remaining. At 24, he became the sport’s youngest World Champion at that time.

He successfully defended the crown in 2006 with Renault’s R26. That season became a close contest with Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher, but Alonso finished the year 13 points ahead after victories in Bahrain, Australia, Spain, Monaco, Britain and Canada. Renault also won the Constructors’ Championship in both seasons.

Kimi Räikkönen was Alonso’s major rival during the 2005 campaign, while Felipe Massa and Jenson Button never won either of those Renault titles. Alonso later became a two-time champion overall, although his later Formula One teams did not add another drivers’ championship.
