Which driver is known as 'The Professor'?

The story behind the answer

The Formula 1 driver known as “The Professor” is Alain Prost.

The Frenchman earned the nickname because of his analytical, calculated approach to racing. Rather than relying only on spectacular overtakes, Prost became famous for carefully managing tyres, fuel, brakes, and race pace. He was often able to extract a strong result by understanding how a race was developing and minimizing unnecessary risks.

Prost competed in Formula 1 from 1980 to 1993 and won four World Drivers’ Championships, in 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1993. He recorded 51 Grand Prix victories, a record that stood until Michael Schumacher surpassed it in 2001. His intense rivalry with Ayrton Senna, especially during their McLaren years, became one of the defining stories of the sport.

The nickname is not a formal title and should not be confused with “The Iceman,” a nickname associated with Kimi Räikkönen. Prost’s reputation for precision and intellectual racecraft is what made “The Professor” stick.
