Which driver is known as 'The Flying Scot'?

The story behind the answer

Which driver is known as “The Flying Scot”? Jackie Stewart is the driver associated with that nickname.

Stewart earned it through a combination of Scottish identity, exceptional speed, and sustained success in Formula One. Born in Milton, Scotland, in 1939, he became one of the defining drivers of the late 1960s and early 1970s, winning the World Drivers’ Championship in 1969, 1971, and 1973.

The nickname can be confused with Jim Clark, another legendary Scottish Formula One champion. Clark was also a Scot and one of Stewart’s great predecessors, but “The Flying Scot” is conventionally Stewart’s sobriquet. Stewart drove for BRM, Matra, and Tyrrell, and his Tyrrell years produced two of his three championships.

Beyond his victories, Stewart became influential as a safety campaigner. After retiring, he helped push Formula One toward better circuit, medical, and car-safety standards. His tartan cap and outspoken Scottish persona also made the nickname especially memorable.
