Which driver has the most wins without ever winning the World Championship?

The story behind the answer

Stirling Moss holds the Formula One record for most Grand Prix wins without ever winning the World Championship, with 16 victories. The celebrated British driver finished runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship four times, but never claimed the title.

Moss competed in Formula One from 1951 to 1961 and won his first World Championship race at the 1955 British Grand Prix. He was especially renowned for his versatility, pace, and sportsmanship, competing successfully in major events beyond F1, including the 1955 Mille Miglia.

His closest title opportunities came in 1958, when he lost the championship to Mike Hawthorn by a single point, and in 1959–1961, when he remained among the sport’s leading drivers. David Coulthard, Rubens Barrichello, Felipe Massa, and Mark Webber are other famous drivers with many wins but no championship; none surpassed Moss’s 16 F1 victories. The record concerns official World Championship Grand Prix wins, not every race Moss won in his wider career.
