Which driver has the most overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

The story behind the answer

Tom Kristensen has the most overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with nine victories. The Danish driver earned the record across a career that stretched from 1997 to 2013.

Kristensen's first victory came in 1997, when he joined Joest Racing as a late substitute and shared a TWR-Porsche WSC-95 with Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson. He then won six consecutive editions from 2000 through 2005, a remarkable run achieved mainly with Audi prototypes. His other victories came in 2008 and 2013.

His wins were not all with the same manufacturer: he drove Audi for most of them and Bentley in 2003, when he shared the winning Speed 8 with Rinaldo Capello and Guy Smith. His 2013 victory was his ninth and final overall win.

Jacky Ickx is second on the all-time list with six victories. Derek Bell, Henri Pescarolo and several others have fewer overall wins, although some rank highly for starts, class victories or consecutive success.
