Which driver has the most NASCAR Cup Series wins?

The story behind the answer

Richard Petty has the most NASCAR Cup Series wins, with 200 victories.

Petty competed in NASCAR’s top division from 1958 through 1992, racing under names that included the Grand National and Winston Cup Series before the modern NASCAR Cup Series designation. He earned his first victory in 1960 and his 200th, also his final Cup win, in the 1984 Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Known as “the King,” Petty built much of his record with Petty Enterprises, usually driving the famous No. 43 Plymouth or Pontiac. His 200 wins remain well ahead of David Pearson’s 105 and Jeff Gordon’s 93 in the all-time points-paying Cup record book.

Petty’s dominance was especially pronounced in 1967, when he won 27 races in a single season, a record. He also won a record seven Daytona 500s and captured seven championships, a mark later matched by Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson. The 200-win total counts official Cup victories across NASCAR’s historical series names.
