Damon Hill gave Jordan its first Formula One victory by winning the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The race took place on 30 August in exceptionally wet conditions.
The start produced one of Formula One’s largest first-lap accidents, forcing the race to be stopped and restarted. Hill led after the restart, while Michael Schumacher later retired after colliding with David Coulthard while attempting to lap him. Hill then regained first place.
Hill’s teammate Ralf Schumacher finished second, giving Jordan a historic one-two. Team orders prevented Ralf from challenging his teammate in the closing laps. The victory was Hill’s 22nd and final Grand Prix win, and it also marked Jordan’s breakthrough after years of competing without a victory.
