Alan Sugar, a Dragon's Den investor, founded the computer company Amstrad.
Sugar established Amstrad in 1968, initially trading in consumer electronics. The company later became strongly associated with affordable home computers, including the Amstrad CPC range, which launched in the 1980s. Amstrad's products helped bring home computing and related technology to a broad consumer market in Britain and elsewhere.
Sugar became a Dragon's Den investor in the programme's later years, joining the rotating panel as a highly experienced entrepreneur. His direct questioning and emphasis on commercial scale reflected his background building a large electronics business.
Amstrad is sometimes confused with other British technology companies from the home-computer era, such as Sinclair Research or Acorn Computers. Sugar's connection is specifically to Amstrad, the company he founded and led. His business career also included interests in consumer electronics, telecommunications and media.
