Which Dragon's Den investor founded the retail chain Amstrad?

The story behind the answer

Alan Sugar founded the consumer-electronics company Amstrad.

Sugar established Amstrad in 1968, with the name formed from his initials, A.M.S., and the word trading. The company became known for affordable consumer electronics, including hi-fi equipment, satellite television products and personal computers. Its success made Sugar one of Britain's most prominent business figures.

Although Sugar is strongly associated with business television, he was a Dragon on the British programme only for a limited period. He appeared on Dragon's Den as a guest investor in the first series before becoming better known as the lead business personality on The Apprentice.

Amstrad is sometimes confused with Sugar's later investments or with Amstrad's acquisition of other technology businesses. The key fact is that Sugar founded Amstrad itself; the company's later ownership and product history are separate questions.
