Which Dragon's Den investor founded the business group Amstrad?

The story behind the answer

Alan Sugar founded the business group Amstrad.

Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968, using a name formed from his initials and those of his business partner Stanley D. Amstrad became known for consumer electronics, including audio equipment, satellite television products and personal computers. The company grew from a small electronics business into a prominent British technology brand.

Sugar later became a prominent television personality and joined the Dragon's Den-style investor tradition in The Apprentice, but he was not a regular Dragon on the British version of Dragon's Den. That distinction is important because both programmes feature entrepreneurs, business decisions and high-profile investors.

Amstrad was sold to BSkyB in 2007. Alan Sugar's career therefore connects British consumer electronics, telecommunications and television, while the company remains his best-known entrepreneurial creation.
