Julie Deane founded the British stationery and gift company The Cambridge Satchel Company.
Deane started the company in Cambridge in 2008 with the aim of raising money to help her daughter, who had been diagnosed with dyslexia. The business began with traditional leather satchels and expanded through direct sales, online retail and international attention.
The Cambridge Satchel Company became known for brightly coloured leather school-style satchels and collaborations with fashion brands. Its growth is often cited as an example of a small British product business using distinctive design and online marketing to reach a global customer base.
Julie Deane was a guest Dragon on Dragon's Den rather than one of the programme's long-term regular investors. That distinction is important: the word Dragon can refer to a guest appearing on the investment panel as well as to a recurring panel member. Sara Davies, Deborah Meaden and Kelly Hoppen are separate entrepreneurs associated with the show.
