Which Dragons' Den investor founded Amstrad, the electronics company launched in 1968?

The story behind the answer

Alan Sugar founded Amstrad, the electronics company launched in 1968.

Sugar established Amstrad in 1968; the name was formed from his initials, Alan Michael Sugar Trading. The company initially traded in consumer electronics and later became widely known for affordable hi-fi equipment, satellite receivers, home computers and other technology products.

Amstrad's home-computer range included the CPC series, which became especially popular in Britain and parts of Europe during the 1980s. The company also produced the PCW word processor and became associated with consumer-focused technology sold through mainstream retail channels.

Sugar joined Dragons' Den as a guest Dragon rather than being one of the programme's original British investors. His best-known television role is as Lord Sugar on The Apprentice, which is separate from Dragons' Den. The company name is sometimes mistaken for a family name, but it was derived from Sugar's trading initials.
