James Caan was the first Muslim investor to appear on the BBC programme Dragons' Den.
Caan joined the regular panel in 2007 and became one of the programme’s most prominent investors. He was born in Pakistan to Muslim parents and built his reputation in recruitment and private equity before entering television.
His background is distinct from that of later investors such as Touker Suleyman and Tej Lalvani, who also brought family, immigrant and minority-business perspectives to the programme. The wording refers to the first investor identified in the show’s panel history, not the first Muslim entrepreneur ever to pitch in the Den.
Caan later left the regular panel, but his time on the programme remains associated with investment in recruitment, services and consumer businesses. Hamilton Bradshaw was the private-equity firm he founded.
