Alan Sugar is the Dragons' Den investor who founded the electronics company Amstrad.
Sugar established Amstrad in 1968, combining his name with the initials of his trading company, Alan Michael Sugar Trading. The business first sold consumer electronics and later became known for affordable home computers, including the Amstrad CPC range.
Amstrad expanded into satellite television equipment and other consumer products. Sugar’s business career made him a natural fit for the BBC programme, where entrepreneurs present companies to a panel of wealthy investors seeking funding and expertise.
A common mix-up is confusing Amstrad with Sugar’s later football ownership or his role in The Apprentice. Amstrad was the company that made his fortune and is the key business associated with his name. The company was sold to BSkyB in 2007, several decades after its founding.
