Alan Sugar founded the electronics company Amstrad and later appeared as a Dragon's Den investor.
Sugar established Amstrad in 1968. The company became known for consumer electronics, including hi-fi equipment, satellite television products and personal computers. Its name was formed from the initials of Alan Michael Sugar Trading.
He joined the UK television programme as a Dragon in the 2007 series, bringing experience from electronics, technology and business leadership. His blunt questioning and emphasis on commercial scale made him a distinctive member of the panel.
Amstrad is sometimes remembered mainly for its computers, but the company produced a broader range of consumer electronics. Sugar's Dragon's Den role came decades after the company was founded.
