The song was written by Summer with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. It began as “Love to Love You,” recorded in 1974 and released in the Netherlands in 1975, before being expanded and issued internationally under the better-known title “Love to Love You Baby.”

Its extended version became one of the first major disco hits released in a long-form format, running approximately 16 minutes and occupying an entire side of the album. Edited versions were made for radio and the seven-inch single. Summer’s breathy, sensual vocal performance helped make the recording controversial as well as commercially successful.

In the United States, the song became Summer’s first Top 40 hit and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1976. It is sometimes confused with her later hits “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff” or “I Feel Love,” but the lyric itself gives the title away.
