The Doctor Who monster known for the catchphrase “Exterminate!” is the Daleks.
The Daleks are a militant extraterrestrial race first introduced in the 1963 serial “The Daleks.” They come from the irradiated planet Skaro and are encased in armoured travel machines equipped with an energy weapon and a distinctive plunger-like manipulator. Their relentless command to “Exterminate!” reflects their hatred of all non-Dalek life.
Writer Terry Nation created the Daleks, while designer Raymond Cusick developed their iconic appearance. Their creation was partly influenced by memories of Nazi ideology, making them more than simple science-fiction monsters: they represent fanaticism, conformity and genocidal nationalism. Davros, introduced later, is established as their creator.
The Daleks are often confused with the Cybermen, another major Doctor Who enemy. Cybermen seek to convert living beings into cybernetic units, while Daleks generally want to destroy anything they consider impure. They became the Doctor’s most recognisable arch-enemies and helped trigger “Dalekmania” in 1960s Britain.
