The Dior handbag introduced in 1999, shaped like a curved saddle and linked with early-2000s pop culture, is the Saddle bag.
John Galliano designed the original Dior Saddle bag during his tenure as Dior’s creative director. Its asymmetrical, curved profile was inspired by an equestrian saddle, while a short shoulder strap allowed it to sit close to the body.
The bag became especially visible through celebrity fashion and appearances in television and magazines. Dior later revived the design in 2018 under Maria Grazia Chiuri, adding new versions and updated carrying options while retaining the recognizable curved silhouette.
The Saddle bag is distinct from the Lady Dior, which is known for its cannage pattern and structured top-handle shape. Although the Saddle has appeared in many fabrics and motifs, its unusual profile remains its clearest identifying characteristic.
