Velociraptor is the dinosaur species traditionally identified as the main raptor in Jurassic Park.
The films portray Velociraptors as highly intelligent, fast, social predators that hunt in coordinated groups. Their sickle-shaped toe claws and ability to test fences, doors, and other boundaries make them among the franchise’s most recognizable dinosaurs. The raptors are central threats in the original film and return throughout the series.
The movie creatures are substantially larger than real Velociraptors. Paleontologists estimate that Velociraptor mongoliensis was roughly two meters long, including its tail, and stood about half a meter high at the hip. Film raptors were influenced in part by the larger Deinonychus, a related dromaeosaurid, which explains why their appearance does not match the known fossil animal exactly.
