Which designer presented the “Highland Rape” collection at London Fashion Week in 1995?

The story behind the answer

Alexander McQueen presented the controversial “Highland Rape” collection at London Fashion Week in 1995.

The collection was inspired partly by Scotland’s history and McQueen’s interpretation of the Highland Clearances. Its title deliberately used provocative language, and the presentation helped establish McQueen as one of British fashion’s most confrontational designers.

The show is often remembered for torn fabrics, tartan references, distressed styling and models whose appearance suggested violence or upheaval. Critics have debated whether the collection addressed historical oppression, sexual violence or both.

“Highland Rape” was not McQueen’s debut collection. His graduate collection, shown at Central Saint Martins in 1992, had already attracted major attention, including an order from stylist Isabella Blow. McQueen later became creative director of Givenchy and founded his own label.
