As a young man, Gucci worked at London’s Savoy Hotel, where he observed the luggage and tastes of affluent guests. He later worked for the Italian luggage maker Franzi before returning to Florence and opening his own business. These experiences helped him combine practical travel equipment with refined Italian craftsmanship.

The company initially focused on saddles, riding accessories and leather bags rather than the broad fashion range associated with Gucci today. Material shortages in the 1930s and 1940s encouraged experimentation with alternatives to leather, including woven fabrics and bamboo. The Bamboo Bag, introduced in 1947, became one of the house’s enduring signatures.

Guccio’s sons joined the family business and helped expand it beyond Florence. Later international growth transformed the small Florentine leather shop into a global luxury brand. Guccio Gucci died in 1953, but the family name remained central to the company’s identity.
