Which designer became the creative director of Dior in 1996 after Gianfranco Ferré?

The story behind the answer

John Galliano became Dior’s creative director in 1996 after Gianfranco Ferré.

Galliano succeeded Ferré at the French luxury house and presented his first Dior haute couture collection in January 1997. His appointment brought a highly theatrical approach to one of Paris’s most important couture brands.

Before Dior, Galliano had built a reputation through his own label and had held senior design positions at Givenchy. His Dior collections became known for elaborate historical references, dramatic silhouettes and lavish runway staging.

The appointment is sometimes confused with Galliano’s later role at Maison Margiela. His Dior tenure came first, beginning in 1996 and lasting until 2011. The transition from Ferré to Galliano marked a major change in the house’s creative direction.
