Which David Mancuso party series influenced the Paradise Garage?

The David Mancuso party series that influenced the Paradise Garage was The Loft.

Mancuso began hosting his invitation-only “Love Saves the Day” parties in New York in 1970. The events were held first at his home at 647 Broadway and became known collectively as The Loft. Unlike commercial discos, The Loft emphasized community, carefully selected music, and high-quality sound rather than alcohol sales or conventional nightclub promotion.

Paradise Garage founder Michael Brody and resident DJ Larry Levan drew heavily on that model. The Garage opened in 1978 at 84 King Street and became famous for its powerful sound system, diverse selections, and central role in New York’s LGBTQ+ nightlife. Its influence later helped popularize terms such as “garage” and “garage house.”

The Gallery and The Saint were also important New York clubs, but they were not Mancuso’s party series. The Gallery was founded by Nicky Siano, while The Saint was a later club modeled partly on The Loft’s private-party culture.
