Which David Bowie album was the only one to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart in the 1990s?

The story behind the answer

The only David Bowie album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart during the 1990s was Black Tie White Noise.

Released in April 1993, the album followed Bowie’s return to a more collaborative, dance-oriented sound. It was produced with Nile Rodgers, who had also worked with Bowie on the 1983 hit album Let’s Dance. The record blends funk, soul, jazz, rock and electronic textures, with Rodgers contributing guitar and production expertise.

Black Tie White Noise entered the UK chart at number one, replacing Suede’s debut album at the top. It remained Bowie’s most recent UK number-one album for two decades, until The Next Day achieved the same position in 2013.

Bowie released several other notable albums in the 1990s, including 1. Outside, Earthling and Hours. None matched Black Tie White Noise’s chart peak in the UK during that decade. The album’s commercial story was more complicated in the United States, where label problems limited promotion and it reached only number 39 on the Billboard 200.
