The David Bowie album released in 2002 that includes the song 'Slow Burn' is Heathen.
Heathen was Bowie's twenty-third studio album, released in Europe on 10 June 2002 and in the United States the following day. 'Slow Burn' appears on the album and features Pete Townshend of the Who on guitar. Its music recalls aspects of Bowie's 1970s sound while carrying lyrics shaped by anxiety and uncertainty.
The album represented a creative resurgence after Bowie's experimental 1990s period. It reunited him with producer Tony Visconti for their first full-album collaboration since Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980. Recording took place mainly in New York between August 2001 and January 2002, and two songs developed from the shelved Toy project.
Some commentators connected 'Slow Burn' and other tracks with the atmosphere following the September 11 attacks, because the album was recorded around that time. Bowie rejected the idea that the songs were written as a direct response, explaining that the material reflected a broader anxiety he had already been feeling. 'Slow Burn' was also released as a European and Japanese lead single.
